Alternatives To Self Harm:

  • Paint, draw, or scribble on a big piece of paper with red ink or paint
  • Express your feelings in a journal
  • Read books, poems, comic books, magazines, etc.
  • Compose a poem or song to say what you feel
  • Write down any negative feelings and then rip the paper up
  • Take a hot bath or shower (light some candles and use some lavender oil if you take a bath)
  • Wrap yourself in a warm blanket
  • Call a friend (you don’t have to talk about self harm or anything like that)
  • Exercise vigorously - run, dance, jump rope, or hit a punching bag
  • Punch a cushion or mattress or scream into your pillow
  • Squeeze a stress ball or squish play-doh or clay
  • Go for a long walk  or run with your ipod
  • Get your favorite disney movie coloring book and color a page in it
  • Buy a wreck this journal and do a page in it whenever you get the urge
  • Start a quote book and every time you get the urge look up some inspirational quote and sayings, and write them down
  • Watch your favorite tv show while drinking a cup of herbal tea
  • Watch your favorite movie with a warm blanket wrapped around you
  • Go to sleep
  • Blow up a balloon and pop it
  • Edit photos
  • Count - count the steps you take, the popcorn you are eating, the leaves, etc.
  • Make a collage
  • Break pencils or crayons
  • Watch funny youtube videos 
  • Use a red felt tip pen mark where you might usually leave a mark
  • Get a tattoo or/and a piercing 
  • Pop bubble wrap
  • Make as many words as possible out of your full name
  • Paint your nails
  • Make a bracelet 
  • Write a list of things that make you want to self harm and then why they make you feel that way, then crumble up the piece of paper and throw it away
